When looking at different types of boiler systems for your home, you may come across the ‘system’ boiler. This kind of boiler heats your house directly with a system that is built inside the boiler, and the hot water comes from a water cylinder which is external. Because of the water cylinder, there is no need for a water tank taking up extra room in your house as the boiler takes water directly from the mains and heats it itself. The hot water is then stored in the cylinder until it is ready to be used.
Because the water is heated from the mains, you are able to use more than one tap at the same time – so someone can wash their hands while another person is showering and won’t have to worry about not having hot water!
System boilers are also easier to install than many other types of boilers as their parts come preinstalled.
The lack of water tank means you save extra space in your loft – this is particularly useful if you have a small home
They are more energy efficient than most types of boilers as the energy that is used to heat the water is recycled and used again.
Things to consider
There needs to be space available for the hot water cylinder which can take up more space in your home – an airing cupboard is ideal for this if you have one. Be wary that this kind of boiler isn’t as compact as others, such as the combi boiler.
When the hot water is sat in the cylinder for a long period of time it’s inevitable that the water will cool – heat loss may mean better insulation is needed.
Another potential limitation is that the amount of hot water that can be stored depends on the size of the hot water cylinder. If you require more water than it can hold then you might have to wait for the water to reheat again. Most of the time, the size of the cylinder depends on the amount of space you have for it.
