Getting your boiler winter ready

In the warmth and sunshine (torrential rain and hurricanes) of a British summer, the winter seems a long way away.

However, it is best to ensure your boiler is in tip-top condition during these months of minimal use, rather than waiting for it to break down in the middle of a snowstorm.

Before calling in the professionals there are a few things you can do to keep the boiler functioning well.

Like a car, if the boiler is left switched off for months at a time when it is finally turned on it may stutter, or fail to work effectively. So throughout the summer months regularly turn the boiler on to keep it ticking over.

Check the colour of the flame on the gas boiler. If it is any colour but blue call a gas engineer immediately as you may be in danger. If the flame is yellow, there is likely to be a serious problem which will need addressing immediately.

When the boiler is on, does it sound normal? If it is making annoying, loud, unpleasant, clanging noises, all is not right with the boiler and it needs to be repaired.

Additionally, looking carefully at the boiler, you should be able to identify any cracks or any small puddles of water or drips. If there is something abnormal about the boiler you need to call in an expert to service it.

If you know that your home is in a hard water area, you should also consider that there could be a build-up of limescale which can damage the boiler. Additionally, there could be an accumulation of dust and other dirt in the boiler. To clean the boiler you need to call in a boiler expert to do the job.
