There are a number of water treatment systems available for home use but which one, if any, should you consider?
As we all know most of the water utility companies treat water from the mains by adding chlorine in order to kill bacteria as well as fluoride to make the water more ‘healthy’.
However, there is more you can do yourself to treat your water, making it cleaner to drink.
Filtration Systems
A water filtration system is essentially a filter for the entire property which removes any impurities from the water.
This can include removing the chlorine added by the utility companies.
Such a filtration system can be essential if you have any chemical sensitivities and the filters are shown to also remove bacteria and viruses if they are present in the water.
One of the most common is the Legionella bacteria which can cause Legionnaires’ disease which is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia. Although some population groups are at a higher risk of infection everyone is susceptible to this bacteria.
A water filtration system could help reduce the risks of the Legionella bacteria entering your drinking water.

Water Softeners
Some areas have ‘hard water’ which contains a higher proportion of calcium and magnesium. Whilst drinking hard water is safe it can dry out your skin and hair, make glass wear brittle and leave stains on the sink and bath.
These hard to clean spots are known as limescale and can be found on your taps and sinks, and over time deposits can build up on pipes and parts of the dishwasher and washing machine. Eventually, this will damage the equipment and it will stop working.
All is not lost, however. If you know you are in a hard water area you can have a water softener system installed in your home which will prevent these limescale build-ups.
A water softener system comprises a tank between your main water supply and the internal plumbing. The softening medium is placed in a saltwater solution within the tank.
Water then filters through this tank and the calcium and magnesium are effectively removed from the water.
Generally, water that has gone through a water softening system is safe to drink – however, as the calcium and magnesium are replaced with sodium if your water is particularly hard this process could increase your sodium levels to above the recommended daily amount.
But, this all depends on the levels of calcium and magnesium in the water to start with.
