Often the room that becomes purely functional rather than luxurious, the bathroom is a prime candidate for reappraisal. Is it high time you updated yours? Maybe you’ve given it some thought but drawn a blank how you might do it? Here are a few suggestions how you might upgrade key elements of your bathroom.
Think outside the box with your tiling. How about covering an entire wall or walls using coloured tiles? Create for yourself a different coloured accent wall. Or, in a central area on the floor, you can take up existing tiles and replace them with a pattern of colourful or interesting-looking tiles or a mosaic – this is what’s known as a ‘tile rug’. Tile rugs add a real personalised touch to your bathroom.
Are you making do with a shower rail and a tatty shower curtain? Installing a glass door will bring your bathroom right up to date. And if you have older family members, you can dispense with the shower step so your shower unit is simply step-in.
Another feature you can include here is a shower bench. Give your bathroom that lavish spa look. You can tile the bench in the same design as you have on the walls or you could use a different material such as teak or glass. And if you want to go to another level, how about having yourself a steam shower, an all-in-one glass doored cabin into which a steam generator supplies all the relaxing benefits of relaxing massaging jets and an overhead rain shower?
Possibly the one thing that contributes most to the shabby look of your bathroom is all the products, the bottles of shampoo, the cosmetics, the stacked up loo rolls. You need storage space. Consider a modern take on the vanity unit – a floating vanity that leaves space between the bottom of the unit and the floor. Mix open and closed storage, or try frosted-glass door inserts to add interest to the room and break up a wall of cabinets.
And if you really want to get with the most radical trends in bathroom design, you could install a sound system, maximising sound quality by placing two speakers in opposite corners of the room. Or you could have installed a low-voltage, television complete with water-resistant remote controls.
