3 common plumbing issues that have simple solutions

As a homeowner or a renter you are almost certainly going to come across a number of plumbing issues that are frustrating if you do not know how to fix them. Luckily, not every plumbing issue requires a professional assessment, so here are 3 issues that can be simply fixed by you.

A sink that is slow to drain

9 times out of 10 when your sink is slow to drain it is a result of the pop up in the drain collecting a large amount of debris over time. Therefore, you will need to clean the pop-up so that the sink can start flowing once again. Most the time you can remove the pop-up easily and clear it but sometimes they are held by a nut under the sink which can be undone using pliers.

A dripping faucet

A dripping faucet over time will significantly waste huge amounts of water, driving up your annual water bill.

A lot of the time the issue is caused by washers in the tap being damaged so that they allow small trickles of water through, causing that annoying drip.

If it is the washer causing the drip, this can be an easy fix. What you need to do is locate the washers, which are found at the spout of the tap and replace them. If you are not sure how to do this, or this is not the source of the leak then leave it to a professional to fix.

A toilet that won’t flush

This is most certainly not the most glamourous duty to be stuck having to do but it is best to know what to do if this does happen to you. The most likely reason why the toilet won’t flush is because it is just draining slowly, however, if you think there is another problem then do not flush it again.

What you need to do is take a plunger and fit it over the hole in the toilet so that you seal the toilet drain. The first plunge you do needs to be gentle to stop all the air already in the bell from forcing water to blow all over the bathroom.

After the first original plunge to release the air in the bell you can start plunging more vigorously to force water in both directions to effectively loosen the clog.
